Milly Dowler was 13 years-old when she was abducted from Walton-on-Thames on 21 March 2002

At 4.08pm a school friend waiting for a bus saw her walking along Station Avenue towards her home. This was the last confirmed sighting of her alive. Her body was discovered on 18 September 2002 by a couple picking mushrooms in Yateley Heath Woods, near Fleet in Hampshire.

Recent statistics (as of 6 February 2008) reveal the vast extent of the investigation, with 59,765 items recorded on Surrey Police´s HOLMES investigation database, specifically:

  • 13,900 investigative actions carried out by officers;
  • 4,800 exhibits collated;
  • 4,941 statements taken from people;
  • 10,934 messages in to the investigation (including faxes and e-mails);
  • 11,620 names contained within the system;
  • 8,951 addresses contained within the system;
  • 4,619 vehicle details recorded within the system.
