Child Protection

Public Protection refers to investigations into Child Abuse, Vulnerable Adult Abuse, Domestic Abuse, Missing Persons enquiries and the management of Dangerous Offenders. In Surrey these areas are investigated within the Public Protection Investigation Units (PPIU), bringing together the wide variety of abuse offences investigated by the police under the remit of one department.

There has been a dedicated unit in Surrey since 1992. The team is headed by a Detective Superintendent and a Detective Chief Inspector and supported by the Strategy Unit based at Headquarters.

Surrey has four public protection teams in the County. They are based at Walton on Thames, Camberley, Farnham and Caterham. Each unit is headed by a Detective Inspector who works with four Sergeants and numerous specially trained officers to carry out public protection investigations.

The specialist officers receive particular training on how to interview children and vulnerable people, balancing the gathering of evidence with a concern for the welfare of the victim during the interview and investigative process. There are specialist courses dedicated to domestic abuse and missing person’s enquiries, as well as joint training with partner agencies in child abuse and vulnerable adult abuse investigations. We recognise the importance of equipping our staff with the appropriate skills and we support their ongoing development.

The units work closely in partnership with other agencies, such as Social Services, Health and Education, Outreach Services, to investigate allegations and support victims across the County.

The unit provides essential assistance to victims and operational officers and raises the level of awareness of the public and police officers.

Surrey prides itself on the professionalism and expertise in these specialist areas of policing and is proud to have been one of only three forces nationally to receive the highest grading in this area awarded by Her Majesty’s Inspectorate of Constabularies.

What you can do

Abuse
It's not always obvious that domestic violence is being committed, abuse can be hidden well beneath the surface. The affects, however, are still hugely damaging to the child.
Domestic Abuse and Neglect
Domestic abuse is a controlling behaviour within an intimate relationship that includes some kind of abuse. It affects both men and women, and wrecks a great many lives, not least those of any children in the family.
Sexual Abuse
Sexual abuse comes about when a child is forced or enticed to take part in sexual activities, whether or not the child is aware of what is happening. Abusers can be male or female, members of the same family, complete strangers or family friends.
Surviving Child Abuse
The experience of abuse might never fully go away - it can be like living a prison sentence in hell. Yet often there can be a reluctance to talk about a previous ordeal. The truth is, it's never too late to seek help and talk about how you feel.
