Surrey Police Association of Culture and Ethnicity
The Surrey
Police Association of Culture & Ethnicity (SPACE) observes, promotes and supports
cultural awareness within Surrey Police and the community.
SPACE liaises with internal and external associations, groups and individuals with a view to valuing diversity, breaking down barriers, challenging discrimination and accepting and understanding all individuals within the force and the wider community.
To help raise awareness, the Association contributes to the research and development of diversity materials and works closely with the Surrey Police Diversity Directorate.
The Association´s principal aims are to:
- Provide a support and social network for ethnic minority officers and staff
- Encourage the use of core skills and abilities to promote cultural understanding
- Provide a consultative forum on police matters involving ethnic diversity issues, thus enhancing racial harmony and quality of service to the people of Surrey
- Support Surrey Police in the long-term investment to forward the recruitment and retention of people from ethnic minorities
- Raise the profile of, and give a voice to officers of minority ethnic origin – particularly on issues of diversity and equality
- Provide an advisory and consultative forum to Surrey Police for policies, to take full account of the needs of staff and communities with ethnic minority backgrounds
- Work with other groups and individuals whose aims and objectives are compatible with or supportive of SPACE
- Provide representation on the National Black Police Association (NBPA) in order to voice the views of ethnic minority staff on a national level
Surrey Christian Police Association
Surrey´s Christian Police Association is a network of officers and staff around the county who share in a regular email prayer group. The group prays about issues facing the force and individuals. Some members also belong to the national Christian Police Association.
SPectrum
SPectrum welcomes all sections of the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LGB&T) community – although it is acknowledged that some transgender staff do not identify themselves as lesbian or gay.
Membership is open to all Surrey Police staff who are supportive of the aims of the group, and are more than happy to answer questions including those from prospective employees.
The objectives of the network are...
- To speak with a united voice within Surrey Police.
- To provide a supportive network for LGB&T staff and remove any feeling of isolation.
- To promote awareness of LGB&T issues within Surrey Police.
- To assist Surrey Police in an advisory/consultative capacity on matters affecting LGB&T staff and communities.
- To actively promote Surrey Police as a career choice for LGB&T members of the community.
- To increase the trust in Surrey Police amongst LGB&T people in Surrey.
Surrey Police Ability Network
The Surrey Police Ability Network (SPAN) was launched in March 2007 and offers advice and support to any employee or officer of Surrey Police who is affected by disability – whether disabled or a carer.
The Association also aims to assist the Force in working towards an environment that is free from discrimination and in raising the profile of disability within the organisation as a whole. Membership is open to all members of the Surrey Police family. You do not have to be covered by the DDA to be a member.
Surrey Women´s Association
The Surrey Women´s Association was formed in 2002 under the acronym SWOA (Surrey Women Officers´ Association). This was changed to SWAY (Surrey Women´s Association) in June 2006 when it was re-launched to include female staff.
Representing the interests of women officers and staff within Surrey Police, SWAY aims to provide a self supporting network and monitoring facility for all female staff, and to aid their personal development and progress in the service. The association identifies professional issues common to women colleagues – such as “under-representation in senior ranks/roles” – and works in an advisory capacity on matters affecting women staff.
Surrey Association of Muslim Police (SAMP)
The Surrey Association of Muslim Police (SAMP) was launched in June 2011. The Association was created to provide a forum by which Muslim officers and staff can discuss their religious welfare needs and collectively take their issues to senior management. SAMP also works with the Muslim community to help increase trust and confidence in Surrey Police.
The Association’s aims are;
- To assist Muslims in Surrey Police to observe their faith and to promote understanding of Islam within the police service & the wider community.
- To provide a forum for Muslims in Surrey Police, and support their religious welfare needs, with a view to improving their working environments.
- To assist in the recruitment and retention of Muslim Police Officers and Police staff, and to assist in the creation of a fair and just working environment for all police officers and staff.
- Increase trust and confidence in Surrey Police and improve community cohesion.

Diversity Recruitment
The job of a police officer is often seen as challenging – possibly even more so if you have an ethnic background, are from the gay community or have a disability. Surrey Police are committed to working with all sections of our community, in particular with those from under represented groups. Regular presentation events are held at our Guildford headquarters which provide you with detailed information about being an officer.
